Back-to-school shopping can get expensive

Back-to-school season is upon us. This season brings about many different things for parents. This includes back-to-school shopping trips to get school supplies for the kids. Unfortunately, these trips can get rather expensive. This can be seen from a recent school-supply-related report.

The report gave some estimates regarding the average per-student cost of school supplies and activities, based on data the report looked at regarding school supply lists from six states and the prices associated with various different school-related expenses for kids, including school supply costs, activity supply costs and fees related to school. The report found that the average per-student cost for school supplies and activities this year is:

  • $1,402 for students in high school.
  • $941 for students in middle school.
  • $649 for students in elementary school.

Some might be surprised at how high these numbers are. Based on the report, it appears that one trend that has been occurring recently is rather large increases in the overall school supply/activity costs for students. When comparing the results of this year's report to a similar report done in 2007, one can see major school supply/activity cost increases between 2007 and now for all three levels of students: a 57 percent increase for high schoolers, a 78 percent increase for middle school students and an 85 percent increase for kids in elementary school.

Given how much in the way of school supply and activity expenses parents can incur in relation to their children, and how important having all school expenses properly met can be for kids, preparing and planning for such costs can be a very important thing for a parent to do. This can especially be the case for divorcing parents, as special issues can arise for them regarding school supply expenses for the kids, such as how such costs will be split.

School supply and activity expenses are among the many important child-related expenses that can be addressed in child support agreements. Having fair and appropriate terms regarding school expenses for the kids in such agreements can help divorcing parents with making sure such expenses are divided in a way that will help keep their kids’ school needs met and is fair to both parents. Attorneys can give guidance to Texas divorcing parents on child support agreement matters.
