How does Texas stack up when it comes to divorce costs?

There are many financial worries a person may have when divorcing their spouse. One such worry are concerns about how high divorce expenses will be.

Many things can influence how much a divorce ends up costing. One such thing is the location of the divorce. Each state has its own particular factors, such as its divorce rules, divorce processes and economic conditions, that can impact divorce expenses.

How does Texas compare to other states when it comes to divorce costs? A recent report indicates Texas is one of the more expensive places to get divorced.

The report ranked the states (and Washington D.C.) on how well-suited they are for low-cost divorces. In coming up with the ranks, the report looked at the following things: divorce filing residency requirements, minimum divorce processing times, divorce court fees and average hourly attorney fees (the last two factors were given extra weight in the ranking determinations).

Texas was ranked in the bottom 10 in the report. Specifically, it was ranked 42nd when it came to how good of a place for low-cost divorces it is.

However, just because divorces tend to be on the more expensive side in the state does not mean divorcing individuals in Texas are doomed to an overly spendy divorce. There are steps individuals can take that may be able to help keep divorce costs down. One is being mindful of expenses when picking what method to take to try to resolve divorce issues. Resolution-seeking methods can vary considerably in their impacts on divorce costs. One method that can sometimes lead to reduced expenses is collaborative divorce. Divorcing individuals interested in the collaborative divorce process should speak with an attorney experienced in this alternative dispute resolution method for divorces.
