Businesses and the employer-employee relationship

The employer-employee relationship is one that has all sorts of regulations connected to it.

For one, there are a variety of federal laws and regulations that put limits and requirements on many employers when it comes to conduct towards employees, including federal anti-discrimination laws (like the Americans with Disabilities Act), the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, Occupational Satiety and Health Administration regulations and the Family and Medical Leave Act. Also, states and local governments have various employment-related laws for businesses. Additionally, the employment agreements a business forms with its employees can lay out many different rules regarding the rights and responsibilities of both the employer and the employee.

So, what a business can and can't do regarding its employees isn't controlled by just one thing, but a plethora of different things. In this complex web of legal rules, a business could easily inadvertently slip into prohibited conduct without good guidance. This is why having advice from a knowledgeable and experienced business law attorney can be critical for a business when coming up with policies and practices regarding workers.

Good legal advice can also be critical for a business when it is accused of employment-related violations by its workers. Such employment disputes can touch on some extremely delicate issues. How these issues are addressed and ultimately resolved can affect a company both through impacting it internally (such as through affecting the relations between the business and its employees) and through influencing what external pressures it is facing (such as through changing its reputation among customers).
