Things to include in pre-marriage financial discussions

One thing that can be a source of arguments among a married couple are money matters. Money conflicts can have major impacts in a marriage; they can sometimes even pave the way to divorce.

Many different things can impact how likely big money conflicts are to arise in a marriage. This includes how much, before getting married, a couple knew about each other financially and got on the same page when it came to financial matters, as unpleasant surprises and conflicting financial strategies are among the things that can be triggers of money-related arguments in a marriage.

Thus, talking about financial matters can be an important step for a couple to take prior to getting married. There are a variety of topics it can be important for couples to cover in pre-marriage financial discussions, including:

  • What financial situation each of them is in. This includes openly and honestly discussing assets, debt and income.
  • What financial goals each of them has.
  • What attitudes regarding finances each of them has.
  • What sort of money management strategies they think should be used during the marriage.

Talking about these things prior to marriage can help a soon-to-be married couple better understand each other financially and understand what sorts of steps may be able to help in keeping monetary tensions from arising between one another in the future.

Another finance-related topic a couple may want to strongly consider discussing with each other as they are preparing to get married is whether to have a prenuptial agreement. While this can be a sensitive topic, it can be a very important discussion to have, given how impactful prenuptial agreements can be. Along with having a prenuptial agreement discussion with their partner, a soon-to-be-married individual should also have a discussion on the topic of prenuptial agreements with an experienced family law attorney.
