How common are apps among small businesses?

One of the new ways for interacting with, reaching out to and providing convenience to customers that technology has made an option for businesses is having a mobile app.

A wide range of different types of businesses have mobile apps for customers. This not only includes big companies, but small businesses as well.

Now, mobile apps are currently something only a relatively small portion of small businesses have. In a recent survey of small businesses, only about one in five of the surveyed businesses said that they have released a mobile app for customers.

However, it appears that mobile apps could be a much more common thing for small businesses in the not-too-far-off future. In the above-mentioned survey, 15 percent of the surveyed businesses said they intend to release an app this year and 12 percent reported having a likelihood of launching an app during or after 2017.

What sorts of motivations drive small businesses to get an app? Increasing sales, improving customer experience and increasing competitiveness were among the more common app goals that were reported by the respondents to the survey that said that they either have an app or plan to get one this year.

Now, providing an app for customers is not something that is without its challenges for a small business. Among the challenges that could come up for a small business in relation to mobile apps are:

  • Challenges regarding the costs of an app.
  • Challenges regarding staying properly engaged with customers on the app.
  • Challenging legal matters. Legal disputes could potentially come up for a small business in relation to a mobile app, such as contract disputes with the company the business hired to create the app.

When a small business decides to have a mobile app built for customer use, it can be important for the business to be aware of the challenges that could come up and properly address these challenges. Experienced business law attorneys can provide small businesses that are integrating mobile apps or other new technologies into their business operations with help navigating legal issues or disputes that come up in connection to the integration.
